The Lost Year
“The Lost Year” is the first part of the book and the film. It is narrated in 3rd person omniscient narration. This parts suggests that the story that is told is about the past. It is evident that this part narrates Marcos, he acts like he is in a dream. He thinks about the last year, which is also referred as “lost year.” That might be foreshadowing that, that year was full of things that are hard or painful to remember. Marcos might be losing these memories and blending new ones by adding some unreal details in order to fill in the gaps. Marcos is in a state of frenzy here, he hears voices that are calling him. When this part is considered with the last part together it can be said that Marcos is actually sympathizes too much, he feels every misery that his family and other families experienced. He is the embodiment of all these feelings, his mind is the communities mind, and his memories are the community’s memories.
